Overview

Lactobacillus rhamnosus K03, also known by the designation L8020, is a specific strain of lactic acid bacteria originally isolated from the oral cavity of healthy individuals who had no history of dental caries or periodontal disease. Developed by JEX Co., Ltd. in collaboration with researchers at Hiroshima University, this strain is utilized as a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) for oral health. It functions by inhibiting the growth of major oral pathogens, including Porphyromonas gingivalis and Streptococcus mutans, through competitive exclusion and the production of antimicrobial metabolites. In clinical settings, it is being investigated for the treatment of peri-implantitis, where a 2.5% preparation is applied topically to the peri-implant sulcus to reduce inflammation and suppuration by modulating the local microbiota.
