Overview

Lactobacillus rhamnosus LC705 is a probiotic bacterial strain used as a dairy adjunct starter culture and as a component in dietary supplements. Unlike the well-known L. rhamnosus GG strain, LC705 has reduced binding to intestinal mucus due to the absence of the spaCBA pili gene cluster required for this adhesion. It has been studied, often in combination with other probiotic strains, for its potential health benefits. Clinical research has investigated its role in alleviating symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), such as abdominal pain and distension, by stabilizing the intestinal microbiota. It has also been evaluated for its effects in Helicobacter pylori infections, where it may exert a beneficial effect on the gastric mucosa, and in reducing the nasopharyngeal presence of Human Bocavirus (HBoV), which is associated with acute otitis media in children. Furthermore, in vitro studies have shown that L. rhamnosus LC705 can downregulate the expression of allergy-related genes in human mast cells and bind certain mycotoxins and heavy metals.
