Overview
Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lcr35 is a specific probiotic strain of bacteria that has been studied for various health applications. It is a live biotherapeutic product being investigated for its ability to modulate the gut and vaginal microbiota. The proposed mechanisms of action include restoring the natural balance of microflora, inhibiting the growth of pathogenic organisms such as *Candida albicans*, *Gardnerella vaginalis*, and *Prevotella bivia*, lowering vaginal pH through the production of lactic acid, and modulating the host's immune system, for instance by restoring the Th1/Th2 balance. It has been formulated for both oral administration (in sachets) and intravaginal use (in capsules and tablets) for different indications. Clinical studies have explored its efficacy in atopic dermatitis, necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants, metformin-induced diarrhea, bacterial vaginosis, and recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis. Some formulations are already marketed, for example, Lcr Regenerans is available as a medical device in Europe.
