Overview

*Lactobacillus rhamnosus* SP1 is a specific probiotic strain of the species *Lactobacillus rhamnosus* that has been extensively studied for its therapeutic potential in oral health and dermatology. In dental applications, it is used as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) for conditions such as chronic periodontitis and gingivitis, and it is incorporated into milk to prevent dental caries in children. The strain functions by modulating the oral microbiota, inhibiting the colonization of periodontal pathogens through competitive exclusion, and dampening local inflammatory responses. Beyond oral health, systemic administration of *L. rhamnosus* SP1 has been shown to improve adult acne by modulating the gut-skin axis; specifically, it normalizes the skin expression of genes involved in insulin signaling, such as IGF1 and FOXO1. It is typically administered orally in the form of sachets, tablets, or supplemented food products.
