Overview

Lactobacillus sakei CJLS03 is a specific strain of lactic acid bacteria isolated from kimchi, developed by CJ CheilJedang Corporation. It is being investigated as a probiotic therapy for obesity. [2, 3] In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial (NCT03248414) involving 114 adults with obesity (BMI ≥25 kg/m²), 12 weeks of oral administration of L. sakei CJLS03 led to a statistically significant decrease in body fat mass and waist circumference compared to placebo, without serious adverse events. [1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8] Proposed mechanisms of action include the modulation of gut microbiota composition, leading to increased production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), improved gut barrier integrity by inducing tight junction protein expression, and reduced levels of inflammatory lipopolysaccharides. [6, 9] Animal studies also showed it could reduce triglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels. [3]
