Overview

Lactobacillus sakei KCTC 10755BP (also known as L. sakei proBio65) is a specific probiotic strain of lactic acid bacteria originally isolated from the traditional Korean fermented vegetable, kimchi. It is being developed and marketed by Probionic Corporation. Clinical studies have investigated its therapeutic potential for atopic eczema–dermatitis syndrome (AEDS) and chronic rhinosinusitis. For atopic dermatitis, oral supplementation has been shown to significantly improve disease severity (as measured by SCORAD scores) in children compared to placebo. It is also formulated as a topical emollient to improve skin barrier function. The proposed mechanisms of action are multifactorial, including the inhibition of *Staphylococcus aureus* growth, modulation of the immune system by reducing levels of IgE and interleukin-4, and decreasing serum levels of inflammatory chemokines CCL17 and CCL27, which are correlated with AEDS severity. It is being investigated and marketed in both live (probiotic) and heat-killed (paraprobiotic/postbiotic) forms.
