Lactobacillus salivarius PS2 (L. salivarius PS2) is a probiotic strain that was originally isolated from the breast milk of a healthy woman. [3, 10] It has been clinically studied for its effectiveness in the prevention and treatment of infectious mastitis in pregnant and lactating women. [1, 3] Oral administration of L. salivarius PS2 has been shown to significantly reduce the incidence of mastitis, decrease the bacterial load in breast milk, and improve associated symptoms. [1, 4] The mechanism of action is believed to involve modulation of the host's immune system, with studies showing changes in inflammatory and cell-growth-related gene expression (such as STC1, IL19, PLAUR, and IFNGR1) in breast milk cells and alterations in milk cytokine levels. [3] The strain is thought to reach the mammary gland from the digestive tract via an endogenous route. [4] A preclinical study investigating its effect on rotavirus-induced diarrhea found it to be less effective than other probiotic strains. [2]
