Overview

Lactobacillus salivarius subsp. salicinius AP-32 is a specific probiotic strain isolated from healthy human intestines. It is being investigated for several therapeutic applications due to its ability to modulate the host's gut microbiome and immune system. [2] In preclinical studies on Parkinson's disease, AP-32 demonstrated neuroprotective effects, improved motor function, increased mitochondrial activity, and enhanced antioxidant levels. [4, 5, 14] It is also being studied for its efficacy in treating neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, where it has been shown in a clinical trial to reduce the duration of phototherapy and hospitalization. [6, 12] The proposed mechanisms of action include inhibiting intestinal β-glucuronidase, altering the profile of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), increasing antioxidant enzyme activities, and modulating the gut microbiota composition. [3, 4] Research has also explored its potential in managing blood glucose levels in diabetes and its anti-obesity effects. [10, 15] This strain is developed by Glac Biotech. [9, 13]
