Overview

Lactobacillus salivarius UCC118 is a well-characterized probiotic bacterial strain isolated from the human terminal ileum. It has been extensively studied for its beneficial effects on gut health and immune modulation in both animal models and human trials[3][5][6]. The primary mechanism of action involves the production of a potent broad-spectrum class II bacteriocin called Abp118, which inhibits pathogenic bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes and other Gram-positive pathogens[2][5]. In vivo studies demonstrate that this bacteriocin-mediated antagonism can protect against infection by certain pathogens. Additionally, L. salivarius UCC118 modulates host immune responses by upregulating anti-inflammatory cytokines (notably IL-10) and promoting M2 macrophage polarization, contributing to reduced inflammation in models of colitis[1][2]. The strain also enhances gut barrier function and supports recovery from dysbiosis by increasing beneficial commensal species in the microbiome[1][2]. Its genome includes unique plasmids encoding stress response proteins and additional probiotic functions[3][7].
