Overview

Lactobacillus salivarius WB21 is a specific probiotic strain of lactic acid bacteria, recently reclassified taxonomically as Ligilactobacillus salivarius WB21, primarily utilized for the maintenance and improvement of oral health. Developed by Wakamoto Pharmaceutical, this strain is designed to colonize the oral cavity and exert antagonistic effects against common periodontal pathogens, including Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. The mechanism of action involves competitive exclusion for adhesion sites on oral surfaces and the production of antimicrobial substances such as lactic acid, which lowers the local pH and inhibits the growth of volatile sulfur compound (VSC)-producing bacteria. Clinical evidence suggests that regular consumption of WB21 in lozenge or tablet form can significantly reduce oral malodor (halitosis), decrease plaque accumulation, and improve clinical parameters of periodontitis, such as probing pocket depth and bleeding on probing.
