Overview

Lactobacillus salivarius WB21 is a probiotic bacterial strain formulated with xylitol for the treatment of halitosis (bad breath). Investigated for this indication by the University of Nove de Julho (UNINOVE) and commercially available in Japan as Minna No Zendamakin WB21 by Wakamoto Pharmaceutical, it works by modulating the oral microbiota. The probiotic reduces the population of proteolytic bacteria and volatile sulfur compound (VSC)-producing bacteria on the tongue coating, which are the primary biological drivers of oral malodor. In clinical research, the strain is typically administered in capsules or tablets to suppress the growth of anaerobic bacteria that degrade proteins into foul-smelling sulfur gases.
