Lactococcus lactis JCM 5805 is a specific, heat-killed lactic acid bacterium developed as a probiotic immunomodulator. Its primary mechanism is the selective activation of plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs), which results in upregulation of type I and III interferon production and enhancement of antiviral immune responses, mediated via a TLR9-dependent pathway. It has been studied as an oral supplement for prevention of viral infections (including influenza and COVID-19), reduction of infections and immune fatigue in athletes, and, more broadly, as an immune health ingredient. Efficacy data shows its oral administration stimulates enteric immune signaling with systemic effects. It is manufactured and commercialized as a functional ingredient for dietary supplements and functional foods, principally under the brand IMMUSE[1][2][4][5][7][10].
