Overview

Lactococcus lactis P22 is a probiotic bacterial strain isolated from the gut microbiota of healthy volunteers. It is being investigated for its potential to treat Clostridioides difficile-induced colitis and associated neurobehavioral symptoms, such as depression and anxiety. The strain functions by inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria like C. difficile and Clostridium symbiosum and by suppressing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) in both the colon and the hippocampus. Preclinical studies in mice suggest that oral administration of P22 can alleviate gut inflammation and neuroinflammation, thereby improving psychiatric-like behaviors.
