Overview

Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis LL-1 is a specific probiotic strain of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) being investigated for its potential in managing metabolic disorders, particularly obesity and hyperlipidemia. In preclinical studies using high-fat diet-induced obese mouse models, LL-1 has demonstrated the ability to significantly reduce body weight, blood lipid levels, and liver oxidative stress. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of the gut microbiota, specifically by decreasing the Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes ratio to limit excess energy absorption and promoting the growth of beneficial taxa such as Muribaculaceae and Bacteroides. This microbial shift leads to an increase in short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production and a reduction in gut pathogens. Furthermore, LL-1 enhances host antioxidant defenses by increasing the activity of enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) while decreasing lipid peroxidation markers such as malondialdehyde (MDA).
