Lactococcus lactis W136 is a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) consisting of a specific strain of lactic acid bacteria, developed by Probionase Therapies for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Administered via intranasal irrigation, the therapy aims to address the sinonasal dysbiosis frequently observed in CRS patients, which is characterized by a reduction in beneficial commensal bacteria and an overrepresentation of pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus. Lactococcus lactis W136 works by competitively excluding pathogenic species, producing antimicrobial metabolites such as lactic acid or bacteriocins, and potentially modulating the host's mucosal immune response to reduce inflammation. A Phase 1 clinical trial has evaluated the safety and tolerability of this intranasal probiotic irrigation in healthy volunteers to support its further development for CRS.
