It binds ferric iron and microbial lipopolysaccharide, contributing to antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory activity. The unqualified name is broad and may refer to human, bovine, or recombinant human preparations and to nutraceutical, functional-food, or investigational therapeutic products. Oral bovine lactoferrin has been studied for visceral obesity and prevention of late-onset sepsis in preterm infants, while recombinant human lactoferrin has been evaluated experimentally as an immunomodulatory anticancer therapy.
