Lactoferrin + ferrous glycine sulfate is a combination therapy being investigated by Alexandria University for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Lactoferrin is a multifunctional iron-binding glycoprotein that serves as an immune modulator and a regulator of iron homeostasis. It is thought to improve anemia by decreasing hepcidin levels and reducing systemic inflammation, thereby enhancing the absorption and mobilization of iron. Ferrous glycine sulfate is an oral iron chelate that provides a source of elemental iron with improved gastrointestinal tolerability compared to traditional iron salts. This combination is being studied in Phase 4 clinical trials to evaluate its efficacy and safety in CKD patients who often respond poorly to standard oral iron due to inflammation-induced hepcidin elevation.
