Overview

Lactoplantibacillus plantarum CECT7528 is a specific strain of lactic acid bacterium originally classified as Lactobacillus plantarum, now reclassified into the Lactoplantibacillus genus. It is one of three closely related probiotic strains (CECT7527, CECT7528, CECT7529) evaluated primarily for their ability to lower cholesterol levels. The strain is notable for high resistance to gastrointestinal conditions, capacity to adhere to intestinal cells, and pronounced bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity. This BSH activity enables the breakdown of bile salts in the gut, which promotes increased cholesterol metabolism as the liver synthesizes new bile acids from cholesterol. CECT7528 also has the ability to assimilate cholesterol from its environment and contributes to formation of short-chain fatty acids, such as propionic and butyric acids. Research demonstrates that when used as a dietary probiotic, especially in combination with other strains and/or monacolin K (a statin-like compound from red yeast rice), the strain reduces total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol in statin-intolerant or hypercholesterolemic individuals. The safety of this strain for human consumption has also been established[1][2][4].
