LAIV H7N3 is a live attenuated influenza vaccine candidate specifically targeting the avian influenza A(H7N3) virus subtype. It is designed as a pre-pandemic or pandemic preparedness vaccine to protect against potential outbreaks of avian-origin influenza in humans. The vaccine is produced by classical reassortment between a low pathogenicity A/mallard/Netherlands/00 (H7N3) virus and an established master donor virus (A/Leningrad4/17/57 [H2N2]). As with other live attenuated influenza vaccines, it contains weakened viruses that replicate only in the cooler environment of the nasal passages and do not cause disease. Preclinical studies in mice and ferrets demonstrated that LAIV H7N3 is safe, immunogenic, and provides protection against homologous wild-type H7N3 challenge. Phase I clinical trials showed it was well tolerated in healthy adults, elicited both humoral (antibody) and cellular immune responses—including CD4+ and CD8+ memory T cells—and did not transmit from person to person[5][3]. The primary indication for this candidate is prevention of infection by avian-origin influenza A(H7) viruses with pandemic potential.
