LambdaVision is developing a protein-based artificial retina designed to restore functional sight in patients with advanced retinal degenerative diseases, such as Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) and Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). The device consists of multiple alternating layers of the light-activated protein bacteriorhodopsin and a polymer, supported by a synthetic fiber membrane. When light hits the bacteriorhodopsin, it acts as a proton pump, generating a unidirectional ion gradient that stimulates the remaining neural circuitry of the degenerated retina, effectively replacing the function of lost photoreceptors. The company utilizes microgravity manufacturing on the International Space Station (ISS) to ensure high-quality, uniform layering of the protein, which is critical for the device's performance.
