Overview

Lamivudine and tenofovir are antiretroviral medications used primarily in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV‑1) infection. Lamivudine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), while tenofovir is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor. Both drugs act by inhibiting the activity of HIV reverse transcriptase, an enzyme necessary for viral replication. They are often used together as part of combination therapy to reduce viral load and improve immune function in people living with HIV[4][5][6]. Tenofovir is also approved for the treatment of hepatitis B virus infection. These drugs do not cure HIV or AIDS but help manage the disease when taken as prescribed[1][4]. Lamivudine was developed by GlaxoSmithKline; tenofovir was developed by Gilead Sciences.
