Overview
Lanicemine is a small molecule investigational drug that acts as a low-trapping non-competitive antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. It was originally developed by AstraZeneca and later by Biohaven Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), including treatment-resistant depression. Lanicemine differs from ketamine in its lower trapping at the NMDA receptor channel pore and was designed to provide rapid antidepressant effects with fewer psychotomimetic side effects compared to ketamine. Despite promising early results in clinical trials for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), lanicemine did not meet primary efficacy endpoints in phase II studies and its development for CNS disorders has been discontinued[1][2][3][4][6].
