Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Laninamivir is a long-acting neuraminidase inhibitor used for the treatment and prevention of influenza A and B. It is administered as an inhaled dry powder, typically as a single dose, which provides prolonged antiviral activity in the respiratory tract. Laninamivir itself (R-125489) is the active metabolite; it is delivered as its prodrug form, laninamivir octanoate (CS-8958), which is converted to laninamivir in the lungs after inhalation. The drug works by inhibiting viral neuraminidase enzymes on the surface of influenza viruses, thereby blocking the release of new viral particles from infected cells and limiting further spread within the respiratory system. Laninamivir has demonstrated efficacy against various subtypes of influenza A and B viruses, including strains resistant to other neuraminidase inhibitors such as oseltamivir. It was developed by Daiichi Sankyo in collaboration with Biota Pharmaceuticals and has been approved for use in Japan since 2010 for treatment and since 2013 for prophylaxis[1][3][4][5][6].
