Overview

Lanolin is a natural yellow fat obtained from the sebaceous glands of sheep and is commonly referred to as wool wax or wool grease. It primarily consists of long-chain waxy esters and sterol esters. Used topically as an emollient and skin protectant in creams and ointments (typically at concentrations of 12-50%), lanolin helps treat or prevent dry skin conditions such as diaper rash, radiation therapy burns, chapped skin from wind or sun exposure, minor burns and sore nipples due to breastfeeding. Its hydrophobic properties help seal in moisture already present in the skin and provide a protective barrier against irritation or infection[1][2][3][4][5][7]. Lanolin's mechanism of action involves acting as a skin protectant and moisturizer by forming an occlusive layer on the skin, reducing water loss and providing a barrier against irritants.
