Overview

Lanolin alcohols are a complex mixture of organic alcohols derived from the hydrolysis of lanolin, a natural substance obtained from sheep's wool. The primary components include sterols and triterpene alcohols such as cholesterol (the predominant component), lanosterol, agnosterol, and their dihydric derivatives. Lanolin alcohols closely resemble physiological lipids found in human skin, contributing to their compatibility with topical formulations. They are primarily used as an ointment base in pharmaceutical products and are commonly included in allergenic testing panels due to their potential to cause contact allergies. While some sources suggest they may aid wound healing, others note antagonistic effects on wound healing when combined with certain agents like topical insulin[1][2][5]. Lanolin alcohols do not have a specific molecular target or pharmacological mechanism but act mainly as emollients and excipients.
