Overview
Lansoprazole is a small molecule pharmaceutical drug classified as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by irreversibly inhibiting the hydrogen/potassium ATPase enzyme system (proton pump) in the gastric parietal cells of the stomach lining. This action leads to a marked reduction in gastric acid secretion. Lansoprazole is primarily indicated for the treatment and prevention of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, duodenal and gastric ulcers (including those associated with NSAID use), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (a condition characterized by excessive stomach acid production), and for eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection when used in combination with antibiotics. Both prescription and over-the-counter formulations are available[1][2][3][5].
