Lanthanum carbonate is a small molecule phosphate binder used to reduce serum phosphate levels in patients with end-stage renal disease, particularly those on dialysis. It acts by dissociating in the acidic environment of the upper gastrointestinal tract, releasing lanthanum ions that bind dietary phosphate to form insoluble complexes, which are then excreted without absorption. This mechanism prevents intestinal absorption of dietary phosphate and helps manage hyperphosphatemia associated with chronic kidney disease. Lanthanum carbonate is marketed under the brand name Fosrenol for human use and as Renalzin for veterinary use. The drug was developed by Shire Pharmaceuticals[4][5][6].
