Overview
Laonian Kechuan is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation specifically indicated for the treatment of chronic respiratory conditions in geriatric patients, including chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, and pulmonary emphysema. The formulation typically consists of a complex blend of herbal ingredients such as *Herba Ephedrae* (Mahuang), *Semen Armeniacae Amarum* (Ku Xingren), *Gypsum Fibrosum* (Shigao), and *Radix Glycyrrhizae* (Gancao). In TCM theory, it is designed to ventilate the lungs, resolve phlegm, and suppress cough and wheezing. Pharmacologically, the active alkaloids from *Ephedra*, such as ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, act as bronchodilators by stimulating adrenergic receptors, while other components provide antitussive and anti-inflammatory effects to alleviate chronic airway obstruction and irritation.
