Overview

Lapachol is a natural naphthoquinone compound (molecular formula C15H14O3) first isolated from Tabebuia avellanedae (Bignoniaceae family) and also found in other plant species.[3][4] It has been investigated mainly for its **antimicrobial, antifungal, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antimalarial, and antioxidant** properties.[3][2] Its mechanism of action is believed to involve interference with electron transport in cells, inhibition of cell respiratory mechanisms, and possible interaction with cellular membranes. Some studies report antimetastatic, antipsoriatic, anti-leishmanial, and schistosomicidal effects. Despite promising in vitro and some in vivo data, clinical evidence in humans is lacking, and it is not an approved pharmaceutical drug. It has been used traditionally in various medicinal preparations and as a starting scaffold for drug research.[3][1]
