Lapis Judaicus is a mineral drug traditionally used in Unani and Ayurvedic systems of medicine, primarily for the management of urolithiasis (kidney and bladder stones) and other urinary disorders. It is composed mainly of fossilized sea urchin spines containing minerals such as calcium, magnesium, silicon, aluminum oxide, hematite (iron oxide), and silica[1][2][4]. The drug has been described since Roman times by figures such as Dioscorides and Galen. In traditional practice, it is administered either by sucking the stone or consuming its powdered form mixed with liquids[2]. Lapis Judaicus exhibits diuretic (Mudirr-e-Baul) and lithotriptic (Mufattit-e-Hasat) properties—meaning it promotes urine flow and helps dissolve urinary stones[4]. Clinical studies suggest that it can reduce the size of renal calculi without significant adverse effects on kidney or liver function[5]. However, robust clinical evidence remains limited; most data come from small-scale trials or traditional use reports. It continues to be used in folk medicine across Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India—and occasionally as an ingredient in multi-herbal formulations.
