Overview

Large Chengqi Decoction is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula, also known as Da Cheng Qi Tang or Major Order the Qi Decoction. It is a classic purgative formula originating from ancient TCM texts and consists of four main ingredients: rhubarb (Da Huang), mirabilite (Mang Xiao), magnolia bark (Hou Po), and immature bitter orange (Zhi Shi). The formula is designed to purge heat accumulation in the stomach and intestines, relieve constipation, and treat patterns such as Yang Excess or Full Yang in TCM theory. Modern research indicates that Large Chengqi Decoction can attenuate sepsis-related intestinal injury by inhibiting inflammatory responses through modulation of the HMGB1-TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway, thereby promoting intestinal repair. It has shown efficacy in reducing inflammatory markers like IL-6 and MCP-1 in animal models of sepsis-related intestinal damage[1][5]. The decoction is used primarily for acute gastrointestinal conditions characterized by severe constipation with abdominal distension due to heat accumulation.
