Lasalocid

Lasalocid is a polyether carboxylic ionophore antibiotic produced by the bacterium *Streptomyces lasaliensis*. It functions as a mobile carrier, selectively binding and transporting monovalent (e.g., Na+, K+) and divalent (e.g., Ca2+) cations across biological membranes. This disruption of transmembrane ion gradients leads to osmotic lysis of target parasites, making it an effective anticoccidial agent. It also exhibits antibacterial activity, primarily against gram-positive microorganisms. Lasalocid is predominantly used in veterinary medicine as a medicated feed additive to prevent coccidiosis and promote growth in livestock, including poultry and cattle.
