Lat@Lig-QCOS is an experimental mucoadhesive and corneal-permeable nanoparticle formulation of latanoprost developed for the treatment of glaucoma. The system utilizes lignin-based nanoparticles encapsulated with latanoprost and coated with quaternary ammonium chitosan oligosaccharide (QCOS). This positively charged nanocarrier enhances intraocular drug bioavailability by promoting ocular mucoadhesion and modulating corneal epithelial tight junctions to facilitate paracellular transport. In preclinical studies, Lat@Lig-QCOS demonstrated a 2.2-fold increase in corneal permeability and a significantly greater reduction in intraocular pressure (IOP) compared to free latanoprost and commercial formulations like Xalatan, with effects sustained for up to 10 hours.
