Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Latanest is a benzalkonium chloride (BAK)-free, cationic nanoemulsion formulation of latanoprost 0.005% developed by Laboratorios Poen. Latanoprost is a prostaglandin F2-alpha analogue that functions as a selective agonist for the prostaglandin F (FP) receptor, effectively lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) by increasing the uveoscleral outflow of aqueous humor. This specific formulation utilizes an innovative nanoemulsion technology to eliminate the need for benzalkonium chloride, a common preservative associated with ocular surface irritation and damage. Instead, it is preserved with potassium sorbate and is designed to be stored at room temperature without requiring shaking before use. It is indicated for the treatment of primary open-angle glaucoma and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma. Clinical evaluations, including Phase 4 studies, have demonstrated that this nanoemulsion maintains the IOP-lowering efficacy of traditional latanoprost while providing superior tolerability and benefits for the ocular surface.
