Latanoprostene bunod is a small molecule ophthalmic medication used to reduce intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It acts as a prostaglandin F2α analog and is rapidly hydrolyzed in the eye to latanoprost acid and butanediol mononitrate. Latanoprost acid increases aqueous humor outflow through the uveoscleral pathway by remodeling extracellular matrices in the ciliary body, while nitric oxide (NO), released from butanediol mononitrate, relaxes the trabecular meshwork and increases permeability of Schlemm’s canal, enhancing outflow via the trabecular meshwork pathway. This dual mechanism effectively lowers intraocular pressure[6][8]. The drug was developed for use as an ophthalmic solution and is available by prescription.
