Overview

Latosestan is a mucolytic agent developed and marketed in China, primarily by Xi'an Bohua Pharmaceutical. It is indicated for the treatment of respiratory tract infections and conditions characterized by mucus hypersecretion, including acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, pulmonary emphysema, and various forms of sinusitis and rhinitis. Chemically, latosestan is a thiazolidine derivative—specifically (R)-2-(2-ethoxy-2-oxoethyl)thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid—that functions as a thiol-based mucolytic. Its mechanism of action involves the reduction of disulfide bonds within mucoproteins in the respiratory tract, which decreases the viscosity of bronchial secretions and facilitates their clearance through expectoration. The drug has been the subject of bioequivalence studies in China to compare the pharmacokinetic profiles of different oral formulations, such as capsules and tablets, ensuring therapeutic consistency across dosage forms.
