Overview

Latrunculin B is a naturally occurring macrolide compound isolated from the Red Sea sponge Latrunculia magnifica. It consists of a 14-membered bicyclic lactone attached to a rare 2-thiazolidinone moiety. Latrunculin B acts as an inhibitor of actin polymerization by binding to actin monomers near the nucleotide binding cleft with 1:1 stoichiometry, thereby preventing their polymerization into filaments. This disruption of the actin cytoskeleton leads to reversible changes in cell morphology and can induce apoptosis through activation of Bax signaling pathways. Latrunculin B has been investigated as a potential therapeutic agent for glaucoma and may have applications in anticancer strategies targeting highly metastatic prostate cancer[1][2][3][4][5].
