LAVA is a non-adhesive liquid embolic agent developed by Grand Pharmaceutical (Hubei Yuanda) for the interventional treatment of cerebrovascular diseases and hypervascular tumors. It is composed of an ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), with micronized tantalum powder added to provide radiopacity for visualization under fluoroscopy. The agent functions through a precipitation mechanism: upon intra-arterial injection into the target vascular site, the DMSO solvent dissipates into the blood, causing the EVOH copolymer to precipitate and form a solid, sponge-like mass. This solidification process allows for controlled, slow injection and deep penetration into the vascular nidus, effectively occluding blood vessels to treat conditions such as brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs) and hypervascular tumors. LAVA is available in different viscosities (e.g., LAVA-12, LAVA-18, LAVA-34) to suit various clinical requirements.
