Laxabon

Laxabon is a high-volume, polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based osmotic laxative solution used for total bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy, radiological examinations, or colonic surgery. Marketed primarily in Sweden, it consists of Macrogol 3350 (PEG) combined with an electrolyte balance (sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium bicarbonate) designed to minimize net fluid and electrolyte exchange across the intestinal wall. The mechanism of action involves the osmotic retention of water within the intestinal lumen, which increases stool volume and triggers peristalsis, effectively purging the colon. In clinical research conducted by the Karolinska Institutet, Laxabon served as the standard-of-care traditional bowel preparation in trials evaluating whether nutritional drinks (like Fresubin) could provide a better-tolerated alternative for patients, particularly those with cardiovascular or renal conditions sensitive to electrolyte shifts.
