Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Laxofast is an oral laxative suspension developed by Thrift Pharmaceuticals. It is a fixed-dose combination containing light liquid paraffin, milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide), and sodium picosulfate. This combination utilizes three distinct mechanisms to relieve constipation: light liquid paraffin acts as a lubricant to soften stool and ease its passage; magnesium hydroxide acts as an osmotic laxative, drawing water into the intestinal lumen to increase stool volume and stimulate peristalsis; and sodium picosulfate is a stimulant laxative that is hydrolyzed by colonic bacteria to its active metabolite, directly stimulating colonic peristalsis. Laxofast is approved and marketed for the treatment of constipation.
