Overview

LAYLA (PG201) is a herbal pharmaceutical developed by PMG Pharm Co., Ltd for the treatment of osteoarthritis, particularly of the knee. It is a multi-component extract derived from 12 traditional East Asian medicinal plants, including Chaenomelis Fructus, Achyranthis Radix, and Acanthopanacis Cortex. The drug exerts its therapeutic effects by inhibiting key inflammatory mediators, specifically Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNF-α), which are central to the pathogenesis of joint inflammation and cartilage degradation. Clinical studies in South Korea, including Phase III and Phase IV trials, have demonstrated that LAYLA is non-inferior to conventional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like celecoxib and nabumetone in reducing pain and improving physical function. It is approved in South Korea for pain relief, reduction of swelling, and potential cartilage restoration in osteoarthritis patients.
