Overview

LBL-049 is an anti-GDF15 monoclonal antibody being developed by Nanjing Leads Biolabs for the treatment of cancer cachexia. Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is a stress-responsive cytokine that is frequently overexpressed in various advanced malignancies and is a major mediator of the cachexia syndrome, which is characterized by systemic inflammation, loss of appetite, and severe muscle and fat wasting. LBL-049 works by binding to and neutralizing circulating GDF15, thereby blocking its signaling through the GFRAL receptor in the brainstem. By inhibiting this pathway, the drug aims to reverse appetite suppression and metabolic wasting to improve the nutritional status and quality of life for cancer patients. As of mid-2025, the candidate is in the IND-enabling stage, with IND applications to the FDA and NMPA anticipated in the first half of 2027.
