Drug intelligence / Profile preview
LCT oil refers to "long-chain triglyceride oil," a dietary fat composed primarily of long-chain triglycerides (LCTs). LCTs are fats with fatty acid chains longer than 12 carbon atoms. They are the predominant form of fat found in most foods, including vegetable oils (such as soybean and olive oils), animal fats, and dairy products. In contrast to medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), LCTs require bile salts for digestion and are absorbed via the lymphatic system as chylomicrons before entering systemic circulation. This makes them metabolically distinct from MCTs, which are more rapidly absorbed and oxidized for energy[3][9]. LCT oils serve as a major source of calories in both enteral and parenteral nutrition formulations[1][5]. They provide essential fatty acids necessary for various physiological functions.
