Drug intelligence / Profile preview
LEAPS COV-19 is a **peptide-based immunotherapy** developed using the Ligand Epitope Antigen Presentation System (LEAPS) platform intended for the treatment and potential prevention of COVID-19. The drug consists of peptide conjugates specifically targeting conserved regions within the nucleoprotein (NP) of SARS-CoV-2, designed to elicit cytolytic T-cell responses and immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory effects. This targeting of nucleoprotein (rather than the spike protein) provides the theoretical advantage of reduced risk from viral mutation and antigenic drift. In preclinical studies, LEAPS COV-19 demonstrated statistically significant survival benefits in transgenic mouse models infected with SARS-CoV-2, with a 40% survival rate in lethal challenge experiments. The drug’s mechanism is dual: it both stimulates antiviral cytotoxic T lymphocyte responses (CD8+ T cells) and reduces pathological inflammation (including the risk of cytokine storm), aiming to address both acute infection and longer-term complications of COVID-19. Developed by CEL-SCI Corporation in collaboration with the University of Georgia Center for Vaccines and Immunology, the platform is also noted for broad immunomodulatory potential, having shown efficacy in models of H1N1, herpesvirus, and autoimmune conditions. LEAPS COV-19 is not approved for use and remains in preclinical/early clinical development stages[3][7][10].
