Overview

Lecicarbon is a physical-acting laxative suppository developed by Athenstaedt, primarily indicated for the treatment of various forms of constipation and for bowel evacuation prior to diagnostic procedures (such as rectoscopy or sigmoidoscopy) or surgery. The formulation consists of sodium bicarbonate and sodium dihydrogen phosphate embedded in a water-soluble fat base. Upon rectal administration, these components react in the presence of moisture to release carbon dioxide gas. The resulting gas bubbles provide a mechanical stimulus to the rectal mucosa and distend the rectal wall, effectively mimicking the natural filling of the rectum and triggering the natural defecation reflex (peristalsis). This mechanism typically induces bowel evacuation within 15 to 30 minutes. Because its action is purely physical and localized, Lecicarbon avoids the systemic absorption and potential electrolyte imbalances associated with many chemical laxatives, making it suitable for a wide range of patients, including children and pregnant women.
