Overview

Lecithin-bound iodine (LBI), also known as Jolethin or iodolecithin, is a compound formed by the complexation of iodine with lecithin (phosphatidylcholine)[1][5]. It has been used clinically for its effects on thyroid function and in ophthalmology to enhance retinal metabolism and tissue respiration[2][4][7]. LBI is thought to exert anti-goitrous effects by delivering inorganic iodide in vivo, leading to suppression of thyroid ornithine decarboxylase activity and induction of apoptosis in thyroid tissue[7]. In ophthalmology, it has demonstrated protective effects on retinal pigment epithelial cells under hypoxic stress by maintaining tight junction integrity and reducing inflammatory cytokines[4]. The compound is also studied for potential benefits in cognitive health due to the combined properties of iodine (essential for thyroid hormone synthesis) and lecithin (a phospholipid important for cell membrane structure)[8].
