Lecozotan is a small molecule, investigational drug developed for the symptomatic treatment of cognitive deficits in Alzheimer's disease. It acts as a potent, selective, and silent antagonist of the serotonin 1A (5-hydroxytryptamine 1A or 5-HT1A) receptor. By blocking this receptor, lecozotan enhances potassium-stimulated release of acetylcholine and glutamate in the hippocampus—neurotransmitters crucial for cognitive function. This mechanism is believed to potentiate cholinergic and glutamatergic neurotransmission involved in learning and memory.
