Gennova Biopharmaceuticals' live attenuated Leishmania vaccine is a preclinical candidate developed in collaboration with McGill University, Ohio State University, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Johns Hopkins University. The vaccine utilizes a genetically modified strain of the *Leishmania* parasite, specifically a centrin-deleted (*LdCen-/-*) mutant created via CRISPR-Cas9 technology. This modification allows the parasite to infect host cells and initiate an immune response but prevents it from replicating, thereby avoiding the development of clinical leishmaniasis. The program is supported by the Global Health Innovative Technology (GHIT) Fund and aims to provide long-term protection against visceral leishmaniasis through the induction of robust T-cell mediated immunity.
