Overview

Lemon balm (*Melissa officinalis*) is a perennial herb in the Lamiaceae family native to Europe and Central Asia, widely recognized for its therapeutic potential in neurology and psychiatry. Its primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of 4-aminobutyrate transaminase (GABA-T) by its key bioactive constituent, rosmarinic acid. This inhibition leads to elevated levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter, thereby exerting anxiolytic, sedative, and anticonvulsant effects. Lemon balm has been extensively studied in clinical trials for conditions such as generalized anxiety disorder, insomnia, and cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer's disease. Additionally, it exhibits antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antispasmodic properties, making it a versatile botanical extract used in both oral and topical formulations.
