Lemon balm extract is derived from the leaves of the Melissa officinalis plant, a member of the mint family. It contains a variety of bioactive compounds including phenolic acids (such as rosmarinic acid), flavonoids, and essential oils. The extract is rich in antioxidants and demonstrates sedative, calming, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. Its proposed mechanisms of action include modulation of GABAergic activity in the central nervous system, inhibition of viral replication (notably herpes simplex virus), and inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators through cyclooxygenase and NF-κB pathways.
